NATURAL HIGHS OF CHILL: CUT BACK ON CAFFEINE, SUGAR AND CIGARETTES
They're the classic 21st-century pick-me-ups: sugar, caffeine and nicotine. And they work brilliantly - for a very short while. Sadly, the net result of all that scoffing, sipping and puffing is usually that you're more exhausted, anxious and stressed than you were before. If you consume sugar and stimulants regularly and have trouble relaxing, this chapter's for you.
What They Are
Sugar comes in many forms, including glucose, dextrose, maltose, fructose, sucrose and more. We add it ourselves to foods and drinks, but it's also present in large quantities in fizzy drinks, cakes, biscuits, chocolate, sweets, dried fruit, juices, processed foods and refined carbohydrates such as white bread, white rice, white pasta, cakes and biscuits.
Caffeine is found in tea, coffee, colas, other caffeine-containing soft drinks and chocolate in varying amounts. Caffeine causes a rapid release of adrenalin in the body, raising your blood sugar level and giving you instant energy.
Nicotine in tobacco is both a stimulant, much like caffeine, and a relaxant if you're addicted.
