THE NATURE OF YOUR SLEEPING PROBLEM
The first step in understanding the nature of your sleeping problem and its possible causes and developing a strategy that will provide the quickest, most effective results is to assess the nature of your sleep patterns. You'll need to evaluate your current personal habits, such as diet, exercise, and lifestyle, and you'll want to note your past sleep patterns. Keeping a sleep diary (which might more accurately be called a "noctuary") will also help to define your patterns.
At the very least, just thinking about the questions will strengthen your awareness of your sleep problem, and the deeper awareness you garner from your answers will prove especially helpful in establishing your own treatment program.
The first assessment, Current Health and Lifestyle, is designed to uncover the recent factors that may be causing your insomnia. How many cigarettes you smoke or whether or not you take over-the-counter medications, for example, may seem irrelevant to your sleep problems. In reality, however, many of our daily habits and practices, while seemingly harmless, can cause insomnia. The use of cigarettes or certain medications can actually result in disturbed sleep. So answer all the questions carefully, no matter how unusual.
