NATURAL HIGHS OF CHILL: AUTOGENICS: WHY IT’S GOOD

Once learnt, these techniques form a life-long skill that can be used to counter stress-related disorders of many kinds. It can relieve tension and insomnia, lessen anxiety and examination nerves, and help with a wide range of 'mind-made' disorders. Recent research has shown that it can reduce heart attack risk factors such as high blood pressure and blood cholesterol.

AT has been used by people from all walks of life to enhance healing, performance and creativity. It has been taught to international sportsmen and women to boost performance, to airline pilots and crew to combat jet lag and fatigue, and in the workplace to optimise concentration and reduce stress.

Long-term Benefits

Practising AT and passive concentration regularly encourages a shift to a different mode of perception, to a 'witnessing self which observes without judging or striving. Regular users of AT report a freedom from anxiety, a greater resilience to emotional and physical upsets, a calm centre within themselves and a returning sense of being in control of their lives. They also report a greater spontaneity in their relationships, and a freedom from unwanted habits. There may be an increase in creativity and an openness to intuition. They may become more aware of and open to emotions, feelings and memories, including disturbing memories that may have been repressed for some time. Again, the role of the therapist is crucial in helping the client to manage and work through any 'unfinished business' that may surface during AT.

This expanded access to feelings, memories, intuition and creativity, all of which are associated with the right cerebral hemisphere, suggests an opening of communication across the two brain hemispheres. Analysis of central-nervous-system activity during AT has indeed shown an increased balancing of the left and right hemispheres, together with an increase in alpha-wave activity and a measurable drop in both blood pressure and the stress hormone Cortisol.
